Impact: Back2School Bash

August 25th, 2018

Come help the kids from San Diego Refugee Tutoring get ready to go back to school!

Meet the kids at Ibarra Elementary and walk them over to the event. Once at the event help students pick out their backpack, school supplies, try on shoes, get haircuts and take pictures.

San Diego Refugee Tutoring works with refugee students from Ibarra Elementary and their siblings. Students have lived in the United States anywhere from one month to four years. Most kids won't have the opportunity to get new school supplies at home. Let's help them get excited about going back to school.

Our Heart for Colonet, Mexico

Colonet is a small, poor village of 8,000 in Baja California about 3 hours south of the border. Makers Church has been serving in and with this community for over three years. Through a collaborative and relational approach, we seek to bond and strengthen families and empower the youth through education, resources and opportunities so that they can experience wholeness and step into their God given potential.

In Colonet, both parents are often forced to work, leaving many young children home to fend for themselves - which is often a dangerous situation. We envision a “free day care” where we partner with families to assist in caring for their children. We've discovered that, while noble in intentions, most orphanages in Mexico are filled with children who are not orphans. Moms and dads have signed over their children to these organizations with the hope of a better future for their kids. However, our experience, and research, show that most often the healthiest situation for a child is to be surrounded by family, even if it’s not the perfect environment. Our vision is to keep families together and serve these families in mind, body and spirit. In addition to launching the Day Care, our vision is to also adopt the three schools in Colonet providing school assemblies, as well as partnering with local churches, to assist children with the purchases of notebooks, pens, and backpacks, along with providing a gift at Christmas. We also envision gathering the community at our facility for weekly events where we provide a place for young people to have fun. There is currently nothing like this in Colonet. We are building our facility around a permaculture model, and hope to eventually implement other models for long term impact.

How You Can Help

Several times a year, Makers Church leads teams of 10-30 people to build homes and work on our multi-purpose facility (which will house the day care, youth center, medical clinic, etc) as well as conduct children's ministry, build relationships with the community and local schools, churches and businesses, and facilitate door-to-door outreach where we meet, pray with and serve the local families. While down there, we sleep on our property in the cabins we've build. There are beds and bathrooms/showers there too. Prayers and donation are always needed and welcome as well!

If you'd like to join on our Sept 2018 trip, please register by 9/2/18.
